Four miles from the coast, between Cagnes sur Mer and Vence, the village of St Paul de Vence was built as a border fortification between Provence and Savoy. St Paul was in decline until the twenties when it became popular with artists such as Signac, Bonnard and Picasso. Artists were followed by writers and film makers and St Paul became one of the most legendary villages in France
