Eleven miles north of Cannes, the town of Grasse is known as the perfume capital of the world. Grasse was originally renowned for the quality of its leather goods until the sixteenth century when the fashion for perfumed gloves was introduced from Italy. When gloves went out of fashion, the town switched to perfume production and now contains more than thirty perfumeries. The most famous of these are Fragonard, Galimard and Molinard, all of which offer free tours. The tours give one the chance to see how perfume is made, from the gathering of the flowers to the finished product.
