Gare du Nord became too small around 1854, soon after it was built to deal with the rapid increase in railway traffic.
Queen Victoria's visit became the reason to add to the initial line five more tracks in 1884.
The interior was rebuilt and renovated completely in 1889 and a further extension was built on the eastern side in order to serve the suburban train lines. There were also more expansions up to the 1960s, when finally in 1994, the arrival of Eurostar trains made necessary the reorganization of the tracks.
