Gare de Lyon is one of the main stations in Paris with most services running towards south and east France. Gare de Lyon was built in 1895-1902 and was named after the city of Lyon that remains even today a major stop for most long diatance trains that operate in south France.
Some basic destinations that end or start at Gare de Lyon are: TGV Trains to Southern France, the Alps, Basel in Switzerland and Rome in Italy, regional trains and the RER.
Gare de Lyon was initially built for the World Exposition that took place in 1900. It is considered to be a classic example of the architecture of its time and expands on multiple levels. The most remarkable element is the large clock tower at the top of one corner of the station that resembles in style Big Ben.
The station also hosts one of the oldest train station restaurants: Le Train Bleu restaurant is ornately decorated and serves its customers since 1901.
