Gare de l'Est is one of the oldest railway stations in Europe and Paris. It is situated at the 8th arrondissement within a short distance from Gare du Nord. Approximately 34 million passengers pass through Gare de l'Est per year, as it is the fifth-busiest station in Paris.

Gare de l’Est can be very crowded from time to time and there is work in progress at the moment for the new LGV line that will be accommodated soon.

The western wing is the one that used to be the first building of the station and is the oldest one - built between 1847-1850 by François-Alexandre Duquesney in order to serve the line Paris-Strasbourg. The original station has been operating since 1844.

Previously named as Gare de Strasbourg, Gare de l'Est has grown rapidly to and major railway station fro France offering services and itineraries mainly for the east side of the country.
